A look at those new GW boxed sets...

Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone!

This week, Games workshop launched their first batch of Christmas releases, with a host of Battleforce boxed sets including, for the first time, one for Adeptus Mechanicus. Now, GW are happy to shout from the roof tops how these sets are a bargain and offer a considerable saving over the cost of buying the individual units separately, but how much are you actually saving with each set? Well, I sat down and did the calculations for you. We'll kick off with looking at the 40k sets...

So there we have it for the 40k sets. It does seem the Tyranid set is priced £10 too high but, otherwise, the savings are pretty good across the board. The choice of content is a little disappointing in a couple of the sets, though. Without getting into long and involved discussions over which troop type would be a better choice tactically, or more interesting lore-wise, there's a couple of poor choices, model-wise. The Chaos Lord used is the old model, which is really starting to show it's age. The new one would have been a far better choice. Similarly, the Blood Angels Terminator Captain could easily have been replaced by the Primaris Captain, and made use of a couple of the spare bits off the upgrade sprues. In fact, why include the Death Company, when they could have replaced them with 5 more Intercessors and another upgrade sprue, given that Primaris Death Company are now a thing..? It smacks of a way of ditching old models. The Tyranid and T'au boxes are all old models but, as that's pretty much all they have, you can't really take them to task over it and I guess I'm being picky. With savings of up to a third of the cost on some of these sets, it's a bit churlish to complain too loudly...
At least there won't be too many old models in the Age of Sigmar sets...

NIGHTHAUNT COURT OF THE CRAVEN KING

1x Kurdoss Valentian £27.50
10x Dreadscythe Harridans £27.50
10x Bladegheist Revenants £27.50
5x Hexwraiths £22.50
10x Chainrasps £25
10x Grimghast Reapers £27.50

Boxed set cost: £110
Total saving: £47.50

GLOOMSPITE GITZ CAVESHROOM LOONZ

Box contents:
1x Loonboss £17.50
6x Fanatics £25
10x Squig Hoppers £30
3x Rockgut Troggoths £35
Mangler Squigs £50

Total cost of contents: £157.50
Boxed set cost: £110
Total saving: £47.50

SKAVEN CORRUPTING WAR-SWARM

Box contents:
1x Grey Seer £15
20x Clanrats £22.50
20x Plague Monks £22.50
1x Plagueclaw Catapult £22.50
1x Screaming Bell £40
1x Verminlord £60

Total cost of contents: £182.50

Total saving: £62.50

STORMCAST ETERNALS EXORCISM SOULSTRIKE

Box contents:
1x Lord-Exorcist £20
6x Evocators on Dracolines £70
5x Evocators £35
10x Sequitors £37.50

Total cost of contents: £162.50
Boxed set cost: £110
Total saving: £52.50

Again, some good savings there. The Skaven are mostly old miniatures but, as that's all there is that's available (as with the Tyranids above), it's forgivable. There's a lot in that box, too. So, good deals to be had here, then. How is the first Adeptus Titanicus set shaping up..?

KNIGHT HOUSEHOLD BATTLEFORCE

Box contents:
6x Questoris Knights £50
4x Cerastus Knights £40
2x Acastus Knights £30

Total cost of contents: £120
Boxed set cost: £80
Total saving: £40

So, once again, it's a saving of a third on the individual cost and, given that this is a substantial chunk of a full Knight force for AT, it's a pretty good deal.

So, there you have it. Forget Black Friday. If you're building an army, get yourself one of these boxed sets and save yourself a third on the retail cost. It seems to be that these battalion boxed sets are becoming a regular Christmas feature with GW, so long may they continue, and let's see what else they come up with for the festive season over the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for reading!
